Numbers, dates, money and abbreviations are read the way a Vietnamese narrator would say them.

How it works

  1. Add a book

Drop an EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, PDF, DOCX or TXT file into Lumo. Chapters are found for you; rename or skip any of them.

  2. Pick a voice

Choose from 25 Vietnamese voices, northern and southern, and listen to a sample before you start. Set the reading speed you like.

  3. Get an audiobook

Lumo reads the whole book and saves one .m4b file with chapters and cover, ready for Apple Books, BookPlayer, Smart AudioBook Player and more.

Made for long books

Works offline

After a one-time download of the voice model, everything runs on your own processor. Your books never leave your computer.

Picks up where it stopped

Close Lumo in the middle of a 600-page novel. Finished chapters are kept and it carries on from the next one.

Real chapters

The audiobook keeps the book's chapter titles, so you can jump straight to the part you want.

Natural voices

Powered by VieNeu-TTS, an open Vietnamese speech model. It reads at a comfortable pace, with pauses at sentences and paragraphs.

Private by default

Lumo does not ask for an account and does not send your books anywhere. It only goes online once, to download its voice engine and model the first time you open it.

If you want, you can share a finished audiobook with the Lumo library. You see exactly what is sent, it travels over an encrypted connection with an anonymous device code, and a person reviews it before anyone else can listen.

What your computer needs

SystemWindows 10 or 11 (64-bit), macOS 13 Ventura or later (Apple Silicon or Intel), or 64-bit Linux with WebKitGTK 4.1, such as Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 or newer
Processor64-bit, 4 cores or more. Lumo reads with the processor only, so no graphics card is needed.
Memory8 GB recommended. Lumo uses up to about 3 GB while it reads.
Storage1.2 GB for the voice engine and model, plus about 60 MB per hour of audio while a book converts. The finished audiobook takes about 30 MB per hour.
InternetOnly once, to download about 750 MB the first time you open Lumo.

How long it takes depends on your processor. On a 2019 laptop with an Intel Core i5-10210U (4 cores), Lumo reads about 15 characters per second: a 10-hour audiobook, roughly a 400-page novel, takes about 8 hours. Faster and newer processors finish sooner, and you can leave it running overnight or stop and continue later.
